The Stamps and Patches of Mercury 6 Mercury  Mercury 3  Mercury 4  Mercury 6  Mercury 7  Mercury 8  Mercury 9      Mercury Unidentified Mercury 6 Flight MR6 - Friendship 7 20 February  1962  4 h. 55 min 23s John Glenn John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, became a national hero. He flew three times around the world in a blaze of publicity. This was due in no small part to the man's personality and boy-next-door image and to the fact that the USA was catching up with Russia. The flight was a success, although there was a scary moment when a signal indicated that Glenn's heat shield was loose and might not survive the re-entry. But this proved not to be the case and Friendship 7 came down in the Atlantic and was hauled aboard the USS Noa, with John Glenn still inside. Mercury 6 Stamps The flight of Mercury 6 has proved to be popular with over 30 countries over the years celebrating America's first man in space. Only five countries issued stamps in 1962 for the flight with the American stamp being the one that is well known. All of the other countries celebrated Glenn's flight on the anniversary of the flight or as a space achievements. Below is a list of the following countries that have issued stamps for Mercury 6. He also wanted to stress how much Earth itself is simply a neighborhood. The "Friendship 7" artwork was designed and applied to the capsule by Chrysler-artist Cecelia Bibby.
