Marshall Islands
Issue Date: 15/05/2001
On May 15, 2001, the Marshall

honoring man's Conquest of
Space. The dream of manned
space flight was realized when
Soviet cosmonaut Yuri

mankind has achieved
remarkable milestones in
space exploration.
In 1962, John Glenn became
the first U.S. astronaut to orbit
the Earth and, in 1965, Soviet
cosmonaut Alexei Leonov was the first man to walk in space. Thanks to these
courageous pioneers, Neil Armstrong and the astronauts on Apollo 11 became the first
men to reach the Moon in 1969.
Space exploration continued with the first space shuttle - Enterprise - a test vehicle
that paved the way for the development of the first manned space shuttle flight.
Designed by Charles Knotek, each stamp depicts a beautifully detailed image of an
important milestone in space exploration.
