Stamp Profile Exploration of Mars Grenada Date of issue June 21, 1991 Grenada "saluted the coming exploration of Mars" with this seven-sheet set of space stamps. The set includes four sheets of nine stamps each, and three souvenir sheets with one high face value stamp each. Similar to a set issued by Sierra Leone in 1990, the set features a large number of people, spacecraft, and space images (e.g., Viking mission images) related to the exploration of Mars (past and future). The stamps include brief descriptions of the designs. Viking Missions Issue United States Date of issue July 20, 1978 NASA's Viking space program consisted of a pair of space probes sent to Mars, Viking 1 and Viking 2. Both vehicles were composed of an orbiter designed to photograph the surface of Mars from orbit, and a lander designed to study the planet from the surface. This mint stamp, issued on July 20, 1978 (the second anniversary of the landing of Viking 1 on Mars), commemorates these historic Viking voyages.
